In The Dock in the dock

I should have picked up on this earlier, but it seems as though In The Dock finds itself in the dock, as it were.

More specifically, the installment about The Levellers has become a topic of discussion - and provoked some disgruntlement - on a Levellers messageboard. "Focus more on stuff you like and stop whining eh?" Well, that kind of misses the point, really, doesn't it? Oh well.

Although the voting has long since finished, there are still comments being added to the original post - enough to suggest that things could have been a lot closer had the post been picked up on earlier.

I'm quite enjoying the passion that's coming out through these pages! It's nice to have chance to really qualify *why* you like something through rallying against someone else who doesn't. And in turn, as much as I adore a lot of things, I'm having fun venting at the things I don't, again to really think about the why.

It's not personal, it's not a slight, or an insult to disagree on taste...but it is fun discussing it all!

I agree, particularly, as it turned out, in the case of the Levellers!

Apart from a couple of misunderstandings which always seem to be sorted out in the end, it's been fun to mix subjective and objective opinions without getting personal.

Fair play to everyone who's commented after the end of the Levellers debate and also on their forum - all the comments are more constructive than you get in a lot of internet discussion and I haven't seen any abuse. These are not the people who I was referring to in my prosecution argument. The internet's a much better place when everyone plays nicely.

they're sort of proving the point russ made in his comment on the original debate though -- he voted guilty not because of the music, but because levellers fans swamped a music forum expressing opinions they didn't like. I wouldn't call this a swamping, exactly, but it seems to be a character trait.

As for their fury about the Levellers being overrated... well, it rather opens the door to the comment that they're so shit that they couldn't possibly be anything but (certainly on a forum dedicated to them). But maybe that's just me.

Glad you made that last point, ST. I look forward to seeing you being pursued by a bunch of enraged crusties...

On a more serious note, though, yeah it's good that it hasn't descended into personal abuse. I just couldn't understand the comment about only writing about things you like - the whole point of the In The Dock feature is that it presents both a prosecution and a defence case.
